A live instrument, not a worksheet

Universal Perspective is a browser app that shows the real positions of the Sun, Moon, and visible planets from any location, right now — useful for building intuition, alongside whatever curriculum you already teach.

Concepts it makes concrete

  • Altitude and azimuth — how "up" and "which way" describe a direction in the sky, updated live as you turn the horizon view.
  • Earth's rotation — the rotation view shows the globe turning under a fixed sky, with your latitude and the day/night terminator drawn from your actual location.
  • Day and night — watch the terminator sweep past a chosen city and compare it with your own.
  • Moon phases — the current phase, illumination, and next rise/set are computed live, not illustrated from a fixed cycle.
  • The ecliptic — an optional overlay traces the plane of Earth's orbit across your sky, showing why planets cluster along one path.
  • Seasons — time-travel to a solstice or equinox and watch the Sun's arc and day length change for your location.
  • Planetary motion — the In Space view shows the same moment from outside the Earth, so a planet's sky position and its orbital position can be seen together.
  • Reference frames — the rotation view can show the sky from a ground-fixed or space-fixed frame, which is a direct, visual way to talk about what "frame of reference" means.
  • Solar-system scale — a readable (compressed) mode and a true-scale mode make clear that distance and size are not simultaneously to scale unless said so.
  • Comparing locations — set two locations side by side to compare what each sees at the same instant.
  • Shared observation — Look Together generates a specific recommended moment when two locations can observe something together, or in relay.

Ways to use the live app

  • Project the horizon view at the start of class and ask students to predict what's currently above the horizon before revealing it.
  • Time-travel forward and back across a single day to show a full rise-to-set arc for the Moon or a planet.
  • Compare your city with a location on another continent to talk about time zones, hemispheres, and day/night offset.
  • Use the In Space view's readable vs. true-scale toggle to correct the common misconception that solar-system diagrams are to scale.
  • Set up a Look Together link between two classrooms, or between school and home, to observe the same object at a shared, calculated moment.

Ways to use the first story

"The First Clock" (in Stories) walks through how the sky itself was humanity's original way of measuring time and direction. It works well as a short reading before a live-app session, giving students the historical "why" before the interactive "how."

Discussion prompts

  • Why is the Moon visible during the day sometimes, and not at night other times?
  • If it's midnight where you are, what time is it for someone on the opposite side of Earth, and what would they see if they looked up?
  • Why do the planets always appear roughly along the same line across the sky?
  • What's the difference between an object being "above the horizon" and being visible to the eye?
  • If a solar-system diagram showed both true distances and true sizes at once, what would that look like — and why don't most diagrams do that?

Accessibility notes

The interface is keyboard-navigable, includes a skip-to-content link on every page, and uses semantic headings throughout. Interactive controls have visible labels and minimum touch targets. Device notes

Universal Perspective runs in a modern browser on desktop, tablet, or phone. It renders live 3D scenes, so older or low-powered devices may run some views (particularly the solar-system view) less smoothly. No install, plugin, or app-store download is required.

Privacy and no-account notes

There is no sign-up and no student account of any kind — nothing to register, and nothing tied to a name or email. A student's chosen location and preferences are kept only in their own browser's local storage, not on a server. See the privacy page for exactly what that includes.

What we don't claim

We haven't run a study on learning outcomes, don't have a standards alignment document, and have no adopted-curriculum or school-partnership claims to make. This page describes what the tool does; it's up to you to decide how it fits your classroom or standards.
